Do you feel awkward at the end of the conversation? Researchers have studied how people decide when to close a conversation. In Study 1, 800 participants completed a study explaining how the recent talk ended. To gain a partner’s perspective, researchers recruited 250 strangers to have a live conversation in the lab, reporting when they and their partners would like to end.
result? In Study 1, 66% of participants reported that they ended the conversation because they no longer enjoyed it. On average, they believed their partners wanted it to last 61% longer. In Study 2, participants wanted the conversation to last 14% longer, while 46% wanted different topics. In both studies, participants did not communicate with their partners when they were ready to end their favorite topic or conversation.
The results indicate that they are likely to overestimate the desire of others to continue the conversation. Talk about topics that you find both enjoyable. Finish gracefully when you’re still having fun and praise them as follows: I especially like talking about this topic. What do you want to discuss? This will provide you with the information you need for the next successful conversation.
