Filmmaker-driven documentary organization Field of Vision has launched a new apprenticeship funding program to support underrepresented and emerging production crew talent.
Revealed on Thursday (October 14), the fund’s goal is to help work towards removing barriers of entry into the genre. Field of Vision’s program will provide US$30,000 in funding to support four to five roles in the field and provide in-house expertise to apprentices to create further training and mentorship.
The program is open to productions to support fully compensated apprenticeships. It will allow under-represented and emerging talent to work with established crew, so they can gain experience and references to progress in their careers, and earn a production credit.
Independent productions and production houses will find and select their own apprentice based on their own needs and opportunities. Applicants’ total budget for each production shouldn’t exceed $1.5 million to qualify for the fund. Field of Vision, meanwhile, broadly defines under-represented and emerging, and considers socio-economic status, community access and regionality, race, sexual identity and all other barriers to entry, taking into consideration where those differ globally.
Field of Vision also says it strongly encourages productions to consider an emphasis on D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse inclusion. If an apprentice requires additional accommodations, Field of Vision has said the organization will contribute extra funding. Field of Vision will also sponsor an in-country mentor to help oversee an apprenticeship outside the U.S., if one is chosen for the program.
Applications for the program opened this week and will close on Oct. 29. Grantees will be announced on Nov. 15.
