If you want to cross the Mackinac Bridge but want to make sure you can still capture the perfect Instagram photo, never fear: The Mackinac Bridge Authority is reinstating and increasing fees for its driver assistance programs and transport services for bicyclists and pedestrians.
More than 2,000 customers employ the services annually because of a fear of driving across the bridge, to take a break from driving and to better enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The programs were originally suspended in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s back in business beginning Nov. 1. All occupants using the service are required to wear a mask to limit the spread of the virus, a news release said.
“Suspending these popular programs was a difficult decision, but one that was necessary based on what we knew then about this ongoing pandemic,” said Authority Chairman Patrick Gleason. “As our committee and staff have examined these programs, it became clear that reinstatement should come with changes to address staff concerns and costs of the services provided, as the programs have been provided at a net loss for the Authority.”
The last time the MBA evaluated the costs was in 2005, and it was time to reconsider, the release said. The driver assistance program used to be free, but will now cost $10 to “defray the cost of the service,” the release said.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are also required to cross the Mackinac Bridge in a vehicle, and this MBA transport service will cost $5 for pedestrians and $15 for bicyclists. Similarly, snowmobilers are not allowed to ride across the bridge, and the fee for their transport is $20.
