New grant program announced to support youth firefighter training – WKOW

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) — The state Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) is starting a new grant program designed to bring in new firefighting recruits.
The grants provide funding for youth firefighter training programs, like the one they have in Sun Prairie.
Sun Prairie Fire and Rescue runs the program with the Sun Prairie Area School District and Madison College. It allows high school juniors and seniors to meet high school graduation requirements while they earn firefighter certification.
“It’s been more than I could have hoped for. It’s been really good,” said program enrollee Kaitlyn Knutson. “We’re fully-certified firefighters.”
Graduates of the program in Sun Prairie have gone on to paid and volunteer service with Sun Prairie and other local fire departments, according to DSPS.
The new program has funding to award $50,000 in grants this year, and $50,000 next year.
